Prom Night
Brittany Snow leads in this Prom night movie and it has mostly terrible reviews. It is the remake of the film with Jamie Lee Curtis and by the ratings on Amazon, I honestly can’t say
that it would be worth watching. Eight people gave it 5 stars and 34 gave it 1 star out of 67 reviews. The rest are scattered in the middle. Yikes! Can you ever get enough of any Prom Night Movie?
Who can resist a gaudy horror movie that you know is going to be pure slasher? There are several movies to choose from for a Prom Night Movie. The first one we will talk about is Prom Night 1980 which stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen. The story is about some high school seniors who are trying to hide what happened to a man 6 years ago. The killing game begins on prom night by someone who saw what they did and wants revenge.
You’ll see Prom the movie, Prom Night In Mississippi, Worst Prom Ever, Prom Night 2008, Prom Night 1980 and some are available with Amazon Instant Video.
Prom The Movie Review
*No spoilers*
Prom is from Walt Disney Studios, and is rated PG. That should have conveyed a lot of information to prospective viewers. You can’t expect the characters to reflect the darkest depths of any high school population–no cussing, no sex, no drinking, and no drugs. And you’d do well to be prepared for some corny and idealized moments.
But, considering this movie’s upfront identity and obvious target audience, people are unjustifiably harsh towards it. This movie knows what it is, and what it is is nothing to be ashamed of! It’s cute and fun and still manages to possess relatability and discernible depth.
The fact that this movie doesn’t delve into the truly bad and ugly doesn’t make the characters that ARE presented any less real. We all know/knew the star athlete and the “it” girl, the loner and the oddball, the stellar student and the awkward kid, the gossip and the forever couple. They’re all there. I love every character because they’re relatable, and those meant to be likable are. It doesn’t hurt that I think the newcomer cast is excellent. I especially hope to see more from the actors playing Lloyd, Nova, and Jesse. The parents are represented here, too, and we know them as well: the protective dad, the mom who works her tail off to support the family, and the open-minded, uncritical mom…Parents being given presence and some substance in teen flicks is rare and refreshing. The movie even got the clothes and music right. (And the soundtrack is great!) I can’t say the same about others of its kind, whose crew didn’t seem to have stepped foot in a high school of today.
I liked what critic Leonard Maltin had to say about the movie: Teen feelings aren’t trivialized in this film. And, I might add, they’re not dramatized, either. It’s not as simple and artificial as, “OMG, Johnny is so hot. He should have asked me to prom, not Melissa! How dare he?!” Nova combats her preconceptions about what defines a person; how far she is or is not willing to go to adhere to her image, one her father supports; and how well she can take others at face value. Jesse fights taking after a detrimental role model, works on containing his rage, and tries to shed his bitterness from being judged. Jordan chooses between having the night she’s built up in her mind falling flat, and taking on the less perfect night her self-respect demands she take on. These are meaningful emotions and conflicts, and they lead to as many warm moments as there are funny ones. Sure, maybe it’s on the messagey side, but do I need to remind you this is from Disney?
So, ultimately, this movie isn’t about prom. It’s about what prom stands for in the lives of each of the characters, and it’s the setting for the culmination of every student’s four-year journey of personal and social development. This isn’t some empty Cal sweet treat: it has some substance, too!
Hello Mary Lou Prom Night 2 Review
After opening a trunk in the school basement, Vickie who is the date of the principals son is possessed by Hamilton High’s 1957 Prom Queen Mary Lou Maloney who was killed by her boyfriend in one of her Prom evening dresses 30 years earlier. Now she’s back.
I have read in reviews that this is a movie that stands alone and is not a sequel to Prom Night. It does take place at Hamilton High like the others, but is said to be better than the original and new Prom Night.
This movie has 4 stars and here is an Amazon review by Paul Jutras (Florida, USA):
Glad that now the remake of the original Prom Night is in theaters and they finally decided to release Prom Night 2 to DVD. It was always one of my favorite Prom night stories with its super natural aspect of a dead prom queen possessing a high school girl and trying to live the dream of being queen she was denied when she died in the school gym fire in 1950s. A lot better concept than a mere serial killer. My only problem is the same as with most 1980s horror movies. That is the DVD box art. I find it weird that 1980s had the most fantastic VHS box cover art and often some of the worst DVD box cover art.
